Goldenrod is a North American native wildflower that has long been worked with for its soothing and toning effects on several areas of the body, but it is thought to have a special affinity for the respiratory tract and the entire urinary tract.
Though goldenrod is often blamed for seasonal allergies and hay fever, it is more often ragweed (Ambrosia spp.) that is responsible for this, which blooms at the same time. On the contrary, goldenrod is often called upon in blends to counteract seasonal allergies due to its soothing anti-inflammatory properties.
In some regions, some varieties of goldenrod can grow pretty aggressively, outcompeting nearby plants. But this does not make goldenrod invasive! An unwanted weed to some, perhaps, but as a native North American wildflower, this is an example of a native plant thriving.
Approximately 50 seeds, harvested for 2025.
Grown using only compost, water, & organic fertilizer, our plants are never treated or sprayed with anything at all.
Lifecycle: Perennial
Zones: 4-8
Region: Native to North America
Actions: Astringent, antimicrobial, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, anticatarrhal, diaphoretic, diuretic, carminative, vulnerary.
Parts used: Leaf & flower
Planting: Sow seeds by pressing firmly into soil surface in fall or spring, as goldenrod is a light-dependent germinator that requires a cold period to germinate. If you plant the seeds in late fall or early winter, they will begin to germinate when the temperatures warm the following spring. Grows 4-6' high.
Spacing: 12-24" It has a rhizomatous growth habit, which can fill in empty space nearby, encroach on nearby plants, and produce large colonies of clones.
Location: Goldenrod is highly adaptable, and grows well in full sun, but some varieties do well in part shade. She will thrive in just about any average garden soil with decent drainage. Some species also adapt well to heavy clay, sandy, or rocky soils. Avoid planting in overly rich soil which can lead to leggy growth.
Germination: 2-3 weeks after cold period
Our Seeds
The majority of our seeds offered are saved from our small medicinal plant farm right here in the Cascade foothills of Oregon's Willamette Valley.
Our plants are grown only with water, compost, & organic fertilizer. Never sprayed with herbicides, pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, or anything else.
There are some seeds that we have not been able to harvest in abundance ourselves yet, so these are provided by a farm here in Oregon that is certified organic by the USDA and Oregon Tilth.
Important
Always check with local authorities (such as your county extension) to see if non-native plants are invasive or noxious in your region.
Noxious plants are illegal to grow and cannot be shipped across state borders. Invasive species should never be intentionally planted, but should be harvested from the wild instead.
They may hold medicinal value but they can destroy native ecosystems and habitats. There are likely less destructive alternatives with similar medicinal value that you can plant.
